Stop Overeating Binges for Good
You’ve got to understand why you binge eat – especially chowing down on foods that aren’t good for you – to stop the overeating binges that are making your life miserable and could lead to obesity and other health problems. If you have no control over how much you eat after you begin, the binges may be coming from stress or emotional upheaval.
Obesity in adults today is sometimes caused by overeating binges. The cravings are so profound that it’s impossible to stop eating. These cravings are brought on from “triggers” that can be emotional or habitual. For example, mindlessly eating in front of the television may be a habit that you slipped into when you were lonesome or stressed out about something. Now, it’s a habit you can’t break.
If you really want to stop the overeating binge cycle, you’ll have to start learning to pay attention to when and why you eat. Some things you can do to help yourself are:
- Admit that you have an overeating binge disorder.
- Become familiar with your cravings and acknowledge them for what they are – your enemies!
- If you’re depressed, ask your health care provider about anti-depressants.
- Exercise keeps on burning calories even when you quit. Fit a cardio-workout into your schedule each day, even if it’s only for 10 minutes at first.
- Don’t eat past the point where you’re not hungry anymore. Learn to pay attention to hunger cues.
- Small (nutritious) meals, several times a day will prevent you from becoming really hungry so that you eat mindlessly.
- Joining a group that has the same problem as you may help you understand why you binge-eat. There’s power in numbers.
- Eat from the food groups that will provide energy rather than empty calories.
- Surround yourself with positive people and things. For example, listen to upbeat music, not songs that make you feel sad and lonely.
At first, you may suffer setbacks to your plan – in fact, it’s almost a sure thing that you will. Food is one of the most powerful urges a human being can experience and it’s going to be difficult to break away from the potent pull of those cravings.
There’s no magic pill that will instantly cause you to gain control over food cravings and binge overeating, but keeping the goal of feeling better and avoiding serious health problems always first in your mind will seriously help.
